What is the purpose of awareness?

Why do living organic beings develop awareness? It doesn't seem to have any evolutionary purpose. It wouldn't hurt the species to run like clockwork. And on that topic, why did life develop, as opposed to just inanimate objects like rocks? Was there already a living cell contained within the Big Bang? Please do not answer religiously.
