I need help buying a camcorder?

I'm looking to buy a camera to film short films, like 5-15 minutes long and music videos. I don't need HD quality but its got to be good quality. It needs to be adaptable to a tripod. I don't know all too much about cameras, so any advice about purchasing criteria, brand suggestions, model suggestions, dealer suggestions, or anything you think I should know would be greatly appreciated.
